Born in New Orleans, Christopher “Poppa” Foster began life in this world with deep roots in music. An entertainer from early childhood, he began playing piano at four years old and was writing songs by the time he was seven. Poppa is currently recognized as a lyrical stalwart and soulful composer in the community, sometimes referenced as the Allen Toussaint of Tulsa. You may catch him waking from a daydream to jot down a new epiphany or add an eclectic horn arrangement to an unfinished tune.

Poppa Foster has been specially presented in publications such as NPR and the Tulsa Voice, and has performed as the featured songwriter in various writers’ showcases, even being covered by other local artists on their own albums. He’s played the Cain’s Ballroom stage many times with a variety of projects, and has performed and recorded with a diverse group of local artists including Steve Pryor, John Moreland, Annie Ellicott and Wink Burcham. He played the part of Leon Russell with Russell’s touring band at a memorial celebration, playing piano and singing Russell’s songs.

Foster’s newest project is Gravy Baby, Poppa Foster and The Grits debut vinyl record. A New-Orleans infused rock’n’roll album, Gravy Baby is delivering a completely unique package including a gateway fold with memorabilia, posters and extra surprises. Music videos for two singles are in production, due out later this year.

As a bonus, many of the top musicians in the mid-south combine to form The Grits, ensuring a high-energy and dynamic performance each time PF&TG take the stage. In front of the ensemble, Poppa Foster leads, ranging from greasy to theatrical, projecting his wide range of experiences and talents onto his songs and performances. “Exploit the Sight. Explode the Sound!”
